Board Member Laid to Rest: Edna M. Freemont

Posted by Indian Center, Inc. 02/26/2016

Edna M. Freemont, 76,
(Mi'Pi--"Good Moon"), a strong Umon'hon wa'u from the Eagle clan of the Omaha Tribe Tha'thada people passed on to the Spirit World 2/22/2016. Daughter of Edward Freemont and Nellie Morris, she was born 3/22/1939 and spoke her language fluently. Born on the Omaha Indian reservation, Freemont chose to remain in Lincoln with her children and grandchildren, including an infant grandson lost in 2001, whose plot at Wyuka is just feet from her own.

She leaves behind her companion of 40 years, Frank BearKiller, as well her children,
Daughters Kendra “Candy” Stabler and Kinda “Bunny” Stabler and
Sons Charles “Chuck” Stabler (companion Sandra Rose Springer) and Eddy (wife Jacinda) Stabler, all of Lincoln;
Grandsons Owen, Evan, Aaron, Landon, Brandon, Iyn, Kendrick, Kenneth, Eddy Jr., My-Son, Mikyle, Kendall, Tristan, Charles and Braden; Granddaughters (Chandra) Mechelle, Cherelle, RaeAnne, Leslie, Glory, Crystal, Rena, Kaylene, Kiana, Kendra, Carmalee, and Camille;
12 great-grandsons; 7 great-granddaughters,
as well as countless sons, daughters, and grandchildren that she took as her own.

Mr. Mitchell Parker is in charge of Native American Church
services to be held at noon Friday at the Lincoln Indian Center with burial at Wyuka at 3pm. Visitation is at the Indian Center, 1100 Military Road, Lincoln, NE, now through Friday, with a
peyote meeting Thursday night.

A pillar of the Native American community in Lincoln, Edna was one the longest-serving members on the Indian Center's Board of Directors and could always be counted on to speak her mind in a respectful way. She provided everything she could to
anyone in need and made everyone feel welcome. Her gentle but firm teasing and guidance will be missed, but all who knew her, learned from her, and will carry on the traditions.
Wibthanon, Edna.
