August 15, 2016 City Council Meeting

August 15, 2016 Agenda: CITY COUNCIL MEETING
March 2016 Meeting with City Officials
At 3:00pm, representatives from the Indian Center attended the City of Lincoln's Council meeting to address the unsightly fence bordering our grounds as well as recognition of Indigenous Peoples Day. The City Council meeting was held in the Council Chambers in the City-County Building (just north of the Hall of Justice) at 555 S. 10th St., Lincoln (approximately 10th & K Streets), room 112. Two council members particularly seemed concerned about the perplexing issue. An article ran in the August 16, 2016 Lincoln Journal-Star, bringing more colored voices into the fray, but we remain confident that our request was heard and will be resolved. We shall not remain caged much longer. A week later, the city finally tended to its property and cut the overgrown vegetation and noxious weeds thriving on their side of the fence.

INDIGENOUS PEOPLES' DAY was also introduced to the Council as a concept worth adoption by our community, because in spite of the lack of Columbus Day recognition as a City holiday, recognition of contributions by the people native to these lands is persistently minimal. We are not artifacts to be displayed; we are living, thriving people with many voices.
